Conclusion Aerosmith was one of the most popular hard rock bands of the 70s, they set the style and sound of hard rock and heavy metal for the next two decades with their raunchy, ragtime, swagger (Stephen Thomas Erlewine). The Boston-based quintet found the middle ground between the threat of the Rolling Stones and the campy, the sleazy wildness of the New York Dolls, who developed a lean, dirty riff-oriented boogie that was loose and swinging, but also as hard as a diamond (Stephen Thomas Erlewine). In the meantime, Aerosmith developed a prototype for power-ballads to pull off both ballads and having a string of gold and platinum albums, rock & roll made them extremely popular during the mid-70s. By the early 80s, the groups audience had declined as the band fell prey to drug and alcohol abuse. however, their career was far from over. In the late 80s, Aerosmith pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in rock & roll history, returning to the top of the charts with a group of albums that equaled, if not beat, the popularity of their 70s albums (Stephen Thomas Erlewine). Bon Jovi, Poison, and other rock bands of the 80s, were all spin offs of the living rock legend Steve Tyler and his band Aerosmith because they copied their fashion trends and guitar effects. In 1970, Aerosmith formed when vocalist Steven Tyler met guitarist Joe Perry while working at an ice cream parlor in New Hampshire. Tyler, who originally was a drummer, and Perry decided to form a power trio with bassist Tom Hamilton. The group soon expanded to a quartet, adding a second guitarist named Ray Tabano; he was quickly replaced by Brad Whitford, a former member of Earth Inc. By the end of the year they added a drummer named Joey Kramer, and Tyler became the full-time lead singer. Aerosmith relocated to Boston at the end of 1970 (Stephen Thomas Erlewine). In 1972, After playing at clubs in the Massachusetts and New York areas for two years, the group landed a record contract with Columbia Records. Aerosmiths self titled debut album was released in the fall of 1973, climbed to number 166. Dream On was their first single and it was a minor hit, reaching number 59. For the next year, the band built a fan base by touring America, supporting groups as diverse as the Kinks, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Sha Na Na, and Mott the Hoople. The performance of Get Your Wings in 1974, which was the groups second album, and first produced by Jack Douglas, benefited from their constant touring, spending a total of 86 weeks on the chart (Stephen Thomas Erlewine). Sweet Emotion, the funky first single, and still one of the coolest songs ever, from Toys in the Attic, broke into the Top 40 in the summer of 1975. Shortly afterward the album reaching number 11. Its success prompted the re-release of the power ballad Dream On, which shot into the Top Ten in early 1976. Both Aerosmith and Get Your Wings climbed back up the charts in the wake of Toys in the Attic, respectively peaking at number 21 and 74. Walk this Way, Rocks went platinum quickly, peaking at number three (Stephen Thomas Erlewine). In early 1977, Aerosmith took a break and prepared material for their fifth album Released late Draw the Line in 1977, was another hit, climbing to number 11 on the U. S. charts, but it showed signs of exhaustion. In addition to another tour in 1978, the band appeared in the movie Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, performing Come Together, which eventually became a number 23 hit. Another success which appeared in late 1978 was Live! Bootleg, reaching number 13. In 1979 Aerosmith recorded Night in the Ruts, releasing the record at the end of the year. By the time of its release, Joe Perry had left the band to form Joe Perry Project with vocalist Ralph Morman, Bassist David Hull, and Drummer Ronnie Stewart. Night in the Ruts performed respectably, climbing to number 14 and going gold, yet it was the least successful Aerosmith record to date. Brad Whitford left the group in early 1980, forming the Whitford-St. Holmes Band with former Ted Nugent guitarist Derek St. Holmes (Stephen Thomas Erlewine). As Aerosmith regrouped with new guitarists Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay, the band released Aerosmiths Greatest Hits in late 1980, which sold over six million copies. the new lineup of Aerosmith released Rock in a Hard Place in 1982. Peaking at number 32, it failed to match the performance of Night in the Ruts and the record showed that the band was out of ideas. Perry and Whitford returned to the band in 1984 and the group began a reunion tour dubbed Back in the Saddle. Early in the tour, Tyler collapsed on stage, proving that the band hadnt conquered their notorious drug and alcohol addictions. The following year, Aerosmith released Done with Mirrors, Tyler and Perry completed a rehabilitation program. In 1986, the pair appeared on Run D.M.C.s cover of Walk This Way set the stage for the bands full-scale comeback effort, then in 1987 Bruce Fairburn-produced Permanent Vacation. Tyler and Perry allied with professional hard rock songwriters like Holly Knight and Desmond Child, resulting in the hits Dude (Looks like a Lady), Rag Doll and Angel. Permanent Vacation peaked at number 11 and sold over three million copies (Stephen Thomas Erlewine).Pump, released in 1989, continued the bands winning streak, reaching number five, selling over four million copies, and composing the Top Ten singles Love in an Elevator, Janies Got a Gun, and What It Takes. Aerosmith released Get a Grip in 1993. Like Permanent Vacation and Pump, Get a Grip was produced by Bruce Fairburn and featured significant contributions by professional songwriters. The album was a successful as successful as the bands previous two records, featuring the hit singles Livin on the Edge, Cryin, and Amazing. In 1994, Aerosmith released Big Ones, a compilation of hits from their Geffen years; it went double platinum shortly after its release (Stephen Thomas Erlewine). In 1995 Aerosmith went online and had alive concert on the net. They also answered questions from their fans from all over the world setting a record of 2,000 fans for any type of online event (J.D. Reed, p. 37). On July 31, 1996 Aerosmith fired Tim Collins, who was their manager for 12 years. Within a day of Collins dismissal, he went to the press saying that the band was back to their old drug and alcohol habits. Although in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine Tyler denied all of the charges saying that he hadnt had a drink or a drug in 10 years. Then Collins later admits that he hadnt seen Tyler drinking or doing drugs, however he says that he only assumed it because the band was having problems, but Tyler said thats what happens to a band that has been together for 20 years (Rolling Stone, p. 23). In 1997 Aerosmith released a new album called Nine Lives, with songs like, Falling in Love, Kiss Your Past Good-bye, Fallen Angels, and Taste of India. But their were many problems during the making of the album. After the firing of their manager and the scandals that happened afterwards the band had to trash the recordings and start form scratch (Craig Tomashoff, p. 27). We live Rock & Roll, Breathe it, and bring it home, Joe Perry says in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. In another interview with Rolling Stone magazine Steve Tyler says, I dont buy into this idea that youre not supposed to rock n roll after a certain date. Im looking to be the lounge act on the space shuttle so I can sing Walk This Way on the ceiling (Martin Huxley, p. 192).
